Hello students! I'm going to explain today the uses and forms of "used to, be used, get used". These are different forms such as Used to/ didn't use to + infinitive or be used to/ get used to + gerund. Well I'm going to explain this theme because people often get confused about the use of this forms because they look similar.
Used to/ didn’t use to + infinitive.
We use this form to talk about past habits or repeated actions or situations which have
changed.
For example:
- David used to live in Madrid.
- She used to exercise every morning, but since she had that terrible accident she doesn´t exercise anymore.
In present tense do not exist used to so for present habits you can use usually
+ present simple.
For example:I usually walk to work.
In
questions or negative forms it is better do not use “used to”; however, this is
sometimes done in informal spoken English. It is better to ask questions and
create negative sentences using past
simple and an adverb of frequency (usually, always, often, never, etc)
You can use “Would” to refer to repeated
actions in the past.
For example: When I lived in France as a child I would
always eat croissant for breakfast.
Be used to /get used to + gerund.
We use be used to + gerund to
talk about a new situation which is now familiar or less strange. In other words is used to say that something is normal, not unusual.
For example:
- I'm used to living alone.
- Carlos has lived in London for years. He is used to driving on the left.
And finally we use get+ used to+ gerund to
talk about a new situation which is becoming familiar or less strange, so it shows that something is in the process of becoming normal.
For example:
- I can't get used to working at night. I feel tire all the time.
- He doesn't like that small town, but he'll get used to it.
- She found the heels too high, but she got used to them.
Well this is all and I hope you liked it!!! If you have some questions or doubts, please tell me!
